PhD Research Project “Composing music as learning tool in instrumental music education

started in October 2020 – Kunstuni Graz

Supervisors:
Prof. Dr. Jan Jachmann (Kunstuni Graz)
Prof. Dr. Gary McPherson (University of Melbourne)
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Rüdiger (Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf)

Since several years the composition has already found a place in music education, focusing the attention not only on its artistic purpose but also on its pedagogical role.
I would like to explore in depth the educational possibilities of music composition, in order to provide the fundamental role of the music creation in instrumental education. The main purpose of a method that uses the composition as an educational tool to improve and/or acquire some instrumental skills, is primarily not to provide knowledge but rather to develop critical, analytical and aesthetical senses. The aim of this dissertation is to observe and to research how participant’s playing skills change by using improvisation and composition as a complementary methodology in instrumental learning. The aim of this research project is then to explain what, when, how and why research, experimentation and composition can be used as an integrative method in instrumental pedagogy with multiple purpose.

Colori e Multiforme

From Composition to Live-Performance. Irene Malizia publishes an Educational DVD as a result of her artistic and pedagogical research project. The idea started with the publication of the above mentioned book containing five pieces for solo violin, of increasing difficulty, with special violin technique explanations and preparatory exercises, and ended with this educational DVD, as documentation of the entire research process. The objective of this research project is to evaluate the impact that instrumental exploration and experience with contemporary music have on the musical and instrumental development of pupils and students.
